PRACTICAL GUIDES

Percentages without the confusion

Everyday math, made a little more approachable.

Percent means out of 100

To find 15% of 200, divide 15 by 100 and multiply by 200. The result is 30. This is useful for discounts, proportions, and everyday comparisons.

Turn a fraction into a percentage

To find what percentage 30 is of 200, divide 30 by 200 and multiply by 100. The result is 15%. Your base value cannot be zero.

Understand percentage change

For a positive starting value, subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. A change from 50 to 60 is a 20% increase.

Percentage points are different

If a rate moves from 10% to 15%, that is a rise of 5 percentage points. Relative to the original rate, the increase is 50%. Always make clear which comparison you mean.
