How the gpa calculator works
GPA Calculator helps high school and university students calculate their credit-weighted Grade Point Average (GPA) on a standard 4.0 unweighted scale. In higher education, grades carry weight proportional to the credit hours or units assigned to each course; getting an 'A' in a 4-credit course impacts your academic standing twice as much as an 'A' in a 2-credit course.
Add as many course rows as you need, assign credit hours and letter grades (from A down to F), and receive an instant, accurate GPA score calculated to two decimal places.
Step-by-step instructions
- Add rows for each course taken during the term or semester.
- Enter the course credits or unit hours (e.g., 3.0, 4.0).
- Select the letter grade received (A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, etc.).
- Click Calculate GPA to view your credit-weighted Grade Point Average.
Credit-Weighted GPA Formula
GPA = Σ (Course Grade Points × Course Credits) / Σ (Total Credits)Each letter grade is translated into numeric grade points according to standard 4.0 scale values. Points are multiplied by course credits to produce quality points. The sum of all quality points is divided by the total credits attempted.
Practical example
Math (4 credits, grade A = 4.0) gives 16 quality points. History (3 credits, grade B = 3.0) gives 9 points. Total points = 25, total credits = 7. GPA = 25 ÷ 7 = 3.57.
Frequently asked questions
What letter grade scale is used?
Standard North American 4.0 scale: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0.
Can I use this for high school weighted honors/AP classes?
This calculator calculates unweighted 4.0 GPA. For weighted 5.0 systems, institutional formulas vary and should be checked with your academic counselor.
Are Pass/Fail courses supported?
Pass/Fail courses typically do not contribute to GPA quality points and should be omitted from the credit-weighted calculation.
