How the loan calculator works

Loan Calculator provides clear financial estimates of monthly payments, total interest costs, and total repayment amounts for fixed-rate installment loans. Whether you are shopping for a home mortgage, purchasing a vehicle, or consolidating personal credit card debt, understanding the relationship between interest rates and loan terms helps you save thousands of dollars over the life of a loan.

Calculations assume fixed monthly compounding interest in accordance with standard international banking formulas.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Enter the loan principal amount (the total amount borrowed).
  2. Enter the annual interest rate percentage (APR).
  3. Enter the loan term in years or months.
  4. Click Calculate to view your estimated monthly payment and total interest breakdown.

Standard Fixed Amortization Payment Formula

M = P * [ r(1 + r)^n ] / [ (1 + r)^n - 1 ]

Where M = monthly payment, P = loan principal, r = monthly interest rate (annual APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n = total number of monthly payments (term in years × 12).

Practical example

Borrowing $25,000 for a car loan at 6.0% APR over 5 years (60 months): Monthly rate r = 0.005. Monthly payment M = $483.32. Total interest paid over 5 years = $3,999.20.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include property taxes or private mortgage insurance (PMI)?

This calculator computes the principal and interest (P&I) portion. Escrow costs like homeowner's insurance and property taxes must be added separately.

What happens if interest rate is 0%?

For 0% promotional loans, the calculation simplifies to Principal divided by the number of months (P / n).
